Short course on “Everyday strategies when starting a profession”

From 20 to 22 October 2011, some students and  staff members from the Department of Geology attended a very special  short course titled „everyday strategies when starting a profession" by  Sabine Napieralla.

From a simple please and thank you, to successful small talk, to the best business wardrobe and up to a prestigious business lunch, this short course presented the variety of etiquette and its impacts. Thereby particularly, the skills needed during an interview for a new job were focused on and the Participants should get prepared, before starting the professional life. A visit to the cloth production firm Dolzer    in Leipzig and a short visit to the Breuninger company    were conducted to show the "theory" on business wardrobe. Etiquette, small talk, welcoming and the quite confusing rules of a business lunch could be tested by all participants at a 3-course meal at Dorint Hotel in Halle and was a welcome finish of the short course.

The three-day course is just the beginning on preparation for the working world. But especially the appearance and the first impressions are crucial things that decide who will be shortlisted, and beyond that to qualify for the working world. The so-called "soft skills" are most important nowadays, as in everyday’s life good behavior is found less and lesser. But will somebody hire someone who has no good conducts?

So the keynote for this course given by Sabine Napieralla is clear:

"The one who can not live without society, needs to subjugate their rules as society is more powerful then himself."    (Adolph Freiherr Knigge)
